Why Social Security Payments Sometimes Arrive Early

Why a weekend or legal public holiday can move a scheduled benefit payment to an earlier date.

Why the scheduled date moves earlier

If a regularly scheduled benefit delivery date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal public holiday, the payment is delivered on the preceding day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or legal public holiday.

An early date does not add a payment

The rule changes the delivery date of the payment that was already due. An early scheduled deposit is not an extra payment.

Check the annual schedule

SSA's dated calendars show scheduled payments for the year. Compare the 2026 payment schedule or 2027 payment schedule with the regular rules in the payment-date tool.
